November 14th marked World Diabetes Day (WDD), an official United Nations Day created by the World Health Organization to focus on diabetes awareness. The 2017 campaign shined a spotlight on how the disease affects women. Statistics released by WDD showed that 1 in 7 births is affected by gestational diabetes, and approximately half of women with a history of gestational diabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes five to ten years after giving birth. This year’s focus on women provided a platform to promote advocacy efforts throughout the year.
