In a recent study of umbilical cord pH levels, researchers from the United Kingdom observed the relationship between pH levels at birth and the risk of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, or “HIE,” and subsequent cerebral palsy. The results, encompassing data from about 500 babies, showed that infants with acidic pH levels (acidosis) had a 3% – 40% increased risk of death or cerebral palsy, with the risk increasing with worsening acidosis. HIE was reported in 42 infants, and there were 15 cases of cerebral palsy among the babies diagnosed with HIE. Researchers note that more studies are needed to better understand the relationship between severe acidosis at birth and adverse outcomes.
