Age of First-Time Mothers Impacted by Education and Geography

Analysis of nearly 40 years of U.S. births shows that the age women have children varies greatly by location and education. Using data from National Center for Health Statistics, economist Caitlin Myers found that coastal areas and large cities trended older for first-time moms (31 and 32), while rural locales and regions such as the Great Plains and the South saw women becoming mothers at younger ages (20 and 21). The national average age for women entering motherhood has trended older in the past 45 years, up from 21 in 1972 to 26.3 in 2016.

One of the main factors contributing to the age gap is a college education. Women without college degrees were 23.8 years old when they had their first child, compared to 30.3 years for women with a college degree. “These education patterns do help drive inequality, because well-educated women are really pulling ahead of the pack by waiting to have kids,” said Caroline Hartnett, University of South Carolina sociologist and demographer. “But if going to college and achieving an upper-middle-class lifestyle seems unattainable, then having a family might seem like the most accessible source of meaning to you.”
