In her current exhibition—a strikingly honest self-portrait exhibition entitled “How did you get on this canvas?”—artist Lucy Jones challenges stereo-typical perceptions of beauty. Jones depicts herself in a light rarely seen on canvas, highlighting rather than hiding her cerebral palsy with each stroke of her paintbrush. Jones has experienced many physical and emotional challenges as an artist, including struggling to find a comfortable position to paint, but she finds self-acceptance in her work while shattering common perceptions of people with disabilities. “Painting myself has helped me come to terms with all sorts of aspects of myself: being a woman, being a wife,” Jones said of the unapologetic portrayal of herself as an aging female, one of the themes in her work.
