Attorney Lisa Weinstein Answers: “What is HIE and how common is the condition?”

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, or “HIE,” is a type of brain damage that occurs when a newborn’s brain does not receive enough oxygen and blood during the labor and delivery process.  It is an extremely dangerous condition that requires immediate medical intervention.  Signs of potential HIE include fetal distress in the final hours before birth, the need for resuscitation after delivery, severe metabolic acidosis (too much acid produced in the infant’s body), acute neurological abnormalities, and multi-organ dysfunction.

According to a 2014 article in the Journal of Pediatric and Neonatal Individualized Medicine, lack of oxygen and/or interrupted blood-flow at birth has an incidence of approximately 1 to 6 per 1,000 live full-term births in the U.S. Up to 25% of affected infants may develop severe and permanent neuropsychological deficits, such as mental retardation, visual or motor dysfunction, epilepsy and cerebral palsy.

If you believe your child has suffered from an HIE injury, please contact us at 877-262-9767 to discuss your situation.
