I often get asked the question: “What causes birth injuries?”
A birth injury is an injury that occurs at or near the time of birth. Birth injuries can be caused by a lack of oxygen and blood flow to the baby’s brain, known as HIE. Oxygen is necessary to sustain critical cells within the brain. When the brain does not receive proper oxygenation, cell death occurs. It is the lack of oxygen and subsequent cell death that causes brain damage.
Birth injuries can also be caused by trauma, often to the baby’s head, as a result of medical negligence. We often see trauma cases from an instrumental delivery, such as by vacuum or forceps; when the baby’s head is disproportionate to the mother’s pelvis, known as CPD (cephalopelvic disproportion); or when Pitocin/oxytocin is used to augment labor, and as a result, the mom has too many contractions, known as tachysytole. Birth trauma injuries are typically associated with brain bleeds, intracranial hemorrhages, strokes (most common are PAIS – perinatal arterial ischemic strokes) and seizures.
