After her baby was born with jaundice that eventually led to a preventable brain injury, a mother in the UK shares her story. The baby was born healthy, but started to show signs of jaundice—notably, a yellowish tone to the skin—and became lethargic. Unfortunately, an inexperienced midwife failed to recognize the condition, which led to a more severe disorder called kernicterus. Kernicterus results from excess bilirubin, a blood-breakdown byproduct, that can cause brain damage and other injuries. The baby now has cerebral palsy, is mostly deaf, and has little eyesight.
“That’s what’s so heartbreaking,” the boy’s mother said. “The midwife missed the window of opportunity to get him the treatment he needed. The system let us down.” The family hopes to raise awareness for kernicterus so that these devastating injuries do not happen to other babies.
