Girlfriends, Mayli and Brooklyn, are six years old, are only six months apart in age, and love to have sleepovers and dance to pop music in the kitchen like most girls their age. Another similarity they share is that they were both born with spina bifida, a birth defect caused by the incomplete formation of the vertebrae around the spinal cord, causing paralysis in their legs. In the girls’ latest dance party, they bust a move to the popular rap song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),” which has gone viral on social media.
In their hometown of Benbrook, Texas, Mayli’s mother Sami established a dance class for children in wheelchairs called Ayita – a Cherokee name meaning “First to Dance.” The mission of the group is to give kids with disabilities a space “where they won’t feel so different or stared at, or questioned.” The girls are an inspiration to children living with disabilities everywhere to be comfortable letting loose and having a little fun.
