Erb’s Palsy

What Is Erb’s Palsy?

The condition known as Erb’s palsy, also known as Erb-Duchenne palsy, may occur after a brachial plexus injury. It is a permanent injury to the shoulder, arm, hand and fingers, resulting in weak muscle tone and even paralysis in some cases. The condition will typically manifest at birth in the following presentation: the infant’s arm will be rotated inward, limp against his or her side with the forearm extended.

What Causes an Erb’s Palsy Birth Injury?

Erb’s palsy injuries are caused by excessive “stretching” of the nerve fibers found in the brachial plexus, specifically the C5 and C6 nerves. The brachial plexus is formed by intercommunications among the lower four cervical nerves (C5-C8) and the first thoracic nerve (T1). It manages movement and sensation throughout the chest, shoulder, arm, hand and finger muscles. Erb’s palsy can occur from excessive use of mechanical forces. The condition may result from the use of a vacuum or forceps or excessive manipulation in a shoulder dystocia.

Options When Diagnosed With Erb’s Palsy

Erb’s palsy is a condition that may require rehabilitative therapies, surgery, and attendant care. Excellent care and treatment is necessary to allow children affected by such a condition to overcome the disabilities that result from the injury. The medical costs associated with these therapies over the course of a child’s life can be substantial. In cases of medical negligence, it is important to have compassionate and experienced legal representation. An Erb’s palsy lawyer may be able to help you recover compensation to cover the costs of these therapies and medical procedures.
