This year’s #BlackMaternalHealthWeek in April highlighted the health disparities between black mothers and mothers of other races. According to the CDC, black women are up to three times more likely to die of complications from pregnancy than white women. Many factors contribute to this disparity, including racial bias, access to adequate healthcare, and underlying health problems.
Members of congress and community members are working to bring attention to this disparity. For example, North Carolina Congresswoman Alma Adams is aiming to pass the Kira Johnson Act. The Act aims to reduce maternal death rates overall, and in particular for black women, by providing funding to support mothers with mental health conditions and substance abuse problems.
Reducing implicit bias in the medical field may slow maternal morbidity among back women. A large part of this is listening to patients so their concerns are addressed and proper treatment can be accessed if necessary, notes Lauren Bullock, a doula based in Charlotte. She says “…it only takes someone believing you and trusting you to prevent these deaths because most of these deaths are preventable.”
