Chance at the Big Dance for Teen with Cerebral Palsy

With March Madness in full swing, 16-year old Max Plansky couldn’t be happier, as he cheers on his Northeastern Huskies from his wheelchair at the end of his team’s bench. Max was just 9 months old when he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and requires 24/7 care, as he is non-mobile and mostly nonverbal. And although Max doesn’t run around the court like the rest of his teammates, he is a part of the team. “He’s an official team member,” said Northeastern coach Bill Coen. “We had a national letter-of signing for him, he’s been a part of the team, he comes to practice — snow days included — he’s in the locker room pregame, postgame. He wins and loses with us.”

Max’s love for basketball started at a very young age, and his inclusion as a Husky has greatly improved his overall health in the two short years he’s been on the team. Seeing such significant improvements in Max’s self-esteem, health, and even attendance at school, his brother Michael decided he wanted to make this kind of relationship available for more people, so he founded an organization connecting people with disabilities to able-bodied groups called You’re With Us. Michael’s goal is to help 170,000 students in Massachusetts to help them be a part of something, and to help them reach long-term goals like going to college or getting a job. And Max is no exception: his dream to become a sports reporter and blogger for the Huskies is well within reach.
