There was not a dry eye at the finish line of the Castle Howard Triathlon in North Yorkshire, England as 8-year old Bailey Matthews crossed it with confidence. Bailey, who has cerebral palsy, completed the last leg of the race unassisted by his walking aid. He and his family were overwhelmed with the support of the crowd, who stood watching and cheering as Bailey ran the last 20 meters of the race all by himself.
Bailey was born 9-weeks early, and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 18-months. His condition hinders his ability to walk and control his muscle movement and flexibility, but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his goals. With the help of his father Jonathan, Bailey began training for the race on a bike fitted with stabilizers and a walking frame to help him run a training course. “He doesn’t see himself as different to anyone else,” his mother Julie said. “We have always tried to make sure that if there is something he wants to do, there is no such word as ‘can’t’.”
