Clinical Trial: Viagra to Treat Asphyxia in Premature Babies

Doctors at Montreal Children’s Hospital have begun testing Viagra on premature babies suffering from birth asphyxia as part of a highly promising Phase 1 clinical trial. Led by neonatologist Pia Wintermark, the researchers have already shown that sildenafil (Viagra) can repair brain damage in lab rats that were born deprived of oxygen. Health Canada approved testing the safety of the drug on infants as research suggests it may lessen some of the long-term complications associated with more severe cases of birth asphyxia. At present, the only treatment for the condition is head and body cooling, which requires lowering the infant’s body to 33.5 degrees Celsius in the first 3 days of life to rest the brain.
