In July 2018, a USA Today investigation found that more mothers in the United States die from childbirth-related complications than any other country in the developed world. Of the 700 maternal deaths and 50,000 serious maternal injuries from pregnancy or birth-related causes in the U.S., about 50% may have been prevented had better medical care been administered. The investigation cited hemorrhaging and hypertension as two of the leading (preventable) causes of maternal death.
As more light is shed on this topic, maternal health researchers are discovering statistics almost as shocking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recent report on U.S. deaths (2016), death rates among all women of reproductive age are increasing. According to the CDC report, from 2015 to 2016, age-specific death rates increased significantly for age groups 15–24 (a 6% increase), 25–34 (a 9% increase), and 35–44 (a 4.6% increase). These statistics demonstrate that the well-being of women of reproductive age is on the decline.
