After sustaining a brain injury at birth due to negligent medical care, a Northampton girl and her family were awarded a settlement of approximately $25 million. The girl was born in 2010 at a hospital run by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The trust’s chief medical officer apologized for the poor standard of care they received, which “regrettably was not in accordance with the high standards that the Trust and our staff aim to deliver.”
Prior to giving birth, the girl’s mother, who was almost two weeks past her due date, was sent home from the hospital despite contractions and decreased fetal movement. She contended that had her concerns not been ignored, her child’s brain injury could have been avoided. “I now want other expectant mothers to trust their own instincts and to feel empowered to voice any concerns they may have about their pregnancy,” she said.
The money from the settlement will be used to fund 24-hour specialist care and necessary support and equipment for the rest of the child’s life.
