In October of 2007, Rick O’Brien embarked on a new passion: writing children’s books to instill hope, bravery, and strength in kids with disabilities. O’Brien was inspired by his 11 year-old son Connor who has cerebral palsy.
The mystery series “CJ and the Angel Kids” chronicles five children who are all “differently-abled” as they solve mysteries throughout each of the six-book series. The books follow CJ with cerebral palsy, Dee Dee with Down syndrome, Andy with autism, and other special detective children. In honor of O’Brien’s son, all proceeds from book sales go to United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile in Alabama. O’Brien describes his calling to authorship in the book’s dedication, which reads in part, “These Angel Kids teach us about hope, courage, facing adversity and how we can overcome all obstacles to make a perfect world for these children.”
