In mid-November 2017, the FDA cleared a new catheter and flusher system for the treatment of hydrocephalus, a condition where excess fluid accumulates in the brain. Alcyone Lifesciences designed the device to clear shunt blockages (a shunt is a device implanted in the brain as a treatment to allow excess cerebrospinal fluid to drain to another area of the body.) The implant will allow neurosurgeons to provide non-invasive emergency treatment to patients, which doctors believe may reduce the amount of surgeries performed on individuals living with hydrocephalus.
