Members of United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Stanislaus and Tuolumne Counties in California are learning a valuable skill and having lots of fun at the same time. They are learning how to tend a garden built for them behind a fitness center in Modesto, California, where they are weeding, watering, and picking herbs and vegetables as they ripen. Once collected, the members are using the fruits of their labor in cooking classes at the UCP facilities to make Italian salads and other meals. About 30 UCP members work the garden. The intent is “to give members and others a place to learn the benefits of farming and agriculture,” said Andres Fuentes, UCP Modesto site manager.
