Eight-year old Suzy Brunk from Tempe, AZ has autism and is non-verbal. She also has epilepsy, causing her to have severe seizures. Although Suzy’s childhood hasn’t been easy, a 2.5-year old golden retriever named Irish changed everything for the young girl. After Suzy’s family—along with help from their community—saved money for 9 months, Suzy received the service dog, who is trained to know when Suzy is about to have a seizure. Service dog training company AZ Goldens taught Irish to detect a specific scent and to alert an adult when Suzy is about to have a seizure. Recognizing a seizure before it happens is a critical step in making sure Suzy isn’t injured during an episode.
