GlaxoSmithKline’s Zofran (ondansetron) to Blame for Birth Defects in Two New Lawsuits

Two mothers have filed product liability lawsuits against drug giant GlaxoSmithKline in mid-February 2015, both alleging that the anti-nausea medication Zofran (ondansetron), which they both took during their respective pregnancies to combat morning sickness, was to blame for the severe birth defects their children developed. Approved by the FDA for prescription to patients experiencing nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy or serious surgery, Zofran (ondansetron) has been unlawfully marketed and prescribed off-label to treat similar symptoms in pregnant women.

The two suits, filed by attorneys at Grant & Eisenhofer, similarly allege that GlaxoSmithKline failed to warn them and their medical professionals of information linking Zofran (ondansetron) to an increased likelihood of congenital fetal heart defects and cleft palate and cleft lip. One of the complaints was filed by a woman whose children who were born in 2004 and 2006, both of whom suffered congenital heart defects after she took the drug when she was pregnant; another woman alleges that Zofran (ondansetron) led to her daughter’s thirteen different surgeries and continual developmental delays after the drug caused malformations to her heart. Both suits also allege that GlaxoSmithKline has known about the potential risks associated with Zofran (ondansetron) since the mid-1980s, and has received reports of adverse events tied to the drug since at least 2000.
