Sophia was born five weeks premature, necessitating a stay in the NICU of the hospital where she was born. Just four days after her birth, she suffered severe brain damage leading to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. According to Sophia’s lawyer, a nursing error in calibrating and administering the feeding tube Sophia received was to blame, as she was not getting enough oxygen to her brain. Three years later Sophia still struggles to speak and to walk, however the lawsuit her mother Connie filed over the error recently settled for $20 million—the largest medical malpractice settlement in California history—which will be used to fund Sophia’s 24/7 care for the rest of her life. Connie hopes Sophia’s story will lead to better precautions taken by hospitals and will also resonate with other mothers. “Be watchful and don’t be afraid to ask questions in the newborn unit,” she said.
