As maternal death rates climb higher in the U.S., the rates are highest among black women. And yet, up to 60% of maternal deaths are preventable, according to the CDC, begging questions of why so many women are dying due to childbirth complications and what can be done to reverse this trend.
In 2020, the Joint Commission (the leading organization that sets hospital standards) adopted two new standards to combat maternal mortality. The first is aimed at reducing the likelihood of harm related to maternal hemorrhage. The second is intended to reduce the likelihood of harm to maternal severe hypertension or preeclampsia. As accredited hospitals are required to adopt these new standards, they must develop plans for ensuring that maternal health staff can detect and respond to a situation that might put a patient’s life at risk.
