A new study shows that while emergency room doctors have the right information about illness, they do not always make the correct diagnoses based on that information. These information processing errors “are due to the way doctors process the data they have about patients.” In 45% of misdiagnosed cases, there were problems with information processing. 31% of cases involved problems with verifying information that was gathered, while inadequate information gathering occurred relatively infrequently. Author Benjamin Schnapp said, “It’s critical that we understand how and why these errors happen so that we can start to work to prevent them.”
