This year’s Ironman Wisconsin event saw many athletes cross the finish line, but 25-year old Nick Anderson did it while pulling his childhood friend Halden Markusen behind him. Halden has cerebral palsy, a condition caused by brain damage that impairs the body’s control of movement and posture. Nick and Halden participated in the triathlon in conjunction with myTEAM TRIUMPH, a nonprofit that helps disabled individuals compete in races by providing support, equipment, and perhaps most importantly—a devoted teammate. The duo completed the extreme endurance event with fans cheering them on until they crossed the finish line in under 16 hours. “It’s definitely very extraordinary,” said Christian Jensen, executive director of the Wisconsin Chapter of myTEAMTRIUMPH. “It’s only been done a few times, to our knowledge.”
