Each September, Charlie Pope, a young hockey fan diagnosed with hydrocephalus, gets to spend time with his “adopted uncles” of the LA Kings at their annual 5K/10K race. The event was created to raise money for the Hydrocephalus Association which helps to fund hydrocephalus research. Hydrocephalus is condition where excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain.
Other NHL teams are getting involved as well. During pre-game warmups the Anaheim Ducks have worn Hydrocephalus Association jerseys, while the Washington Capitals are planning a fundraising event.
Charlie, 5, has undergone multiple surgeries since he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at 6 months old. He will still need physical therapy, but is now a happy kindergartener.
