A new study published in Diabetologia shows that babies born large for their gestational age (LGA) and to mothers with gestational diabetes are nearly three times more likely to become obese compared to normal size babies born to mothers without the condition. The study analyzed 81,226 children born between January 2005 and August 2013 in Alberta, Canada. Children were separated into six groups based on birthweight and presence of gestational diabetes during their mothers’ pregnancies. Overweight/obesity rates at pre-school age ranged from 21% in the control group (no diabetes and appropriate size for gestational age) to 43% in the gestational diabetes/LGA group. The study’s authors also noted that LGA alone contributed 39% to the child’s risk of risk obesity. The authors hope that their findings will reinforce public health campaigns advising pregnant women to monitor weight gain during pregnancy, as it may significantly affect the health of their child.
