Eight-year old MayRose Hurst was born prematurely and suffered a permanent brain injury. Treated for 11 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Las Vegas hospital where she was born, MayRose’s doctors failed to inform her parents that she had severe anemia and was not producing enough red blood cells.
MayRose’s parents filed a lawsuit alleging negligence in diagnosing and treating her disorder—and in a December 2016 jury verdict, the family was awarded $14.5 million. “This verdict means that we can start looking at options to see just how far we can go …options that we never would have been able to afford,” her mother Tiffani said.
