Premature newborns spending their first holiday season in the intensive care unit of many hospitals across the U.S. will be able to celebrate their first Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa with the help from the March of Dimes. Premature birth, when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, has been linked to conditions such as cerebral palsy as well as intellectual or development delays, and can be a very tenuous experience for families.
The March of Dimes, dedicated to reducing and preventing premature births in the U.S., is spreading holiday cheer by mobilizing volunteers and staff to take family photos, organize winter carnival events, and host family dinners and baby showers. The NICU Family Support program helps over 75,000 families each year, and works with more than 100 hospitals.
