Maternal Death Rate on the Rise in America

Maternal Death Rate on the Rise in America

A new study published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology’s September 2016 issue suggests that while the international maternal mortality rate has decreased since 2000, it has increased in the U.S. since the new millennium. Specifically, researchers reported, the mortality ratio (maternal deaths per 100,000 live births) increased across the majority of states in the U.S. by over 26% in 14 years. In Texas, the figure sharply increased in 2011 and 2012. In California, however, the rate showed a declining trend. While no one cause can be attributed to the increase in U.S. maternal deaths at or shortly after birth, conditions such as preeclampsia that in severe cases may lead to death should be closely monitored throughout pregnancy.
