May I Have This Dance? Sneaker Prom for Disabled Adults a Big Hit

The joint was jumpin’ at last month’s “Sneaker Prom” held at the Sudbury Recreation Center in Concord, Massachusetts. The event, sponsored by a group of parents and their developmentally challenged adult-age children known as the Friday Night Fun Club, attracted dancers from all over town ready to boogie down in their party dresses, suits, and of course, sneakers. Now 45 members strong, the non-profit began hosting activities for adults with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other disabilities in the mid-1970s, at a time when options for social interaction were limited for those living at home.

Treasurer Ann Seamans, one of the Club’s leaders who shuttles the dancers to and from the prom every year, found herself “getting a bit choked up” thinking about her late daughter Heather, a Club member who had Williams Syndrome and passed away in October 2013 of ovarian cancer. Despite her mixed emotions, Ann is still “so excited to be there” at each event and hopes the Club’s mission lives on even after her leadership tenure.
