The Montgomery Miracle League (MML)—a sports group located in Montgomery, Alabama that provides kids with cognitive and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball—celebrated their 10th anniversary with a special event at the Miracle League Field. Donors, supporters, and volunteers for the MML were invited to attend the celebration, along with the 120 young baseball players who live with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADHD, traumatic brain injury, Spina Bifida, deafness and blindness.
Also joining the event were MML’s “Dogs on Call” volunteers, who have been bringing their service dogs to the ballpark since 2011 for moral support, anxiety reduction, and to run the bases with the players. “The MML was a true miracle in the social and cognitive development of my child,” says Kerry Cherry, director and volunteer photographer for MML. Organized sports have fostered a great sense of belonging among kids with disabilities, and the MML, along with other Leagues nationwide, have made great strides in the socialization and emotional well-being of their team members by encouraging, accepting, and including everyone who has a desire to play.
