Music Therapy Hits the Right Note in People with Cerebral Palsy

Music therapy, one of the latest non-traditional healing practices intended to help people with disabilities cope with their symptoms and achieve better quality of life, has recently struck a chord in treating patients with cerebral palsy, autism, and Parkinson’s disease. The basis for this therapy involves translating the science behind how tunes affect the brain and communication in order to comfort and resonate with special needs individuals. Research and technological advancements have brought music therapy to the forefront of treatment options in recent years, made possible by companies like The Sync Project. Unveiled on March 17, 2015, the project aims to link biometric data collected through wearable devices to music preferences and listening behavior. “The Sync Project is based on an idea: that music can be harnessed to improve health,” noted Alexis Kopikis, co-founder and CEO of The Sync Project, whose son has Fragile X syndrome and autism. She went on to say that, “On a daily basis, music empowers [her son] to communicate better, connect and improve his social interaction.”

MedRhythms, LLC is another company offering neurological therapies based on how music biologically impacts the brain. This type of therapy has adopted more scientific, evidence-based methods to foster improvements in communication among people with neurological disorders like cerebral palsy, and the company has even partnered with Boston University Aphasia Resource Center to offer a course in helping people who are unable to communicate. “It is a therapeutic group, and we work on functional language goals through singing with the goal of having a performance at the end of the semester,” said MedRhythms’ CEO Brian Harris.
