NCAA Men’s Hockey Team “Drafts” Player with Disability

In early December, the Quinnipiac Bobcats “drafted” 11-year-old Michael Torello, who was diagnosed with kernicterus as an infant. Kernicterus is a neonatal disorder caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the blood that may cause brain damage. The condition has confined Michael to a wheelchair, dependent upon care from others. Through Team Impact, a national nonprofit that connects children facing chronic illnesses with college athletic teams, Michael will have an opportunity to wheel onto the ice at games, attend practices, and get to know the hockey players at team dinners. The Connecticut-based players are enthusiastic about introducing Michael to their team and Michael is equally as excited to be an honorary member.
