New App Aids Hydrocephalus Patients in Tracking Data

New App Aids Hydrocephalus Patients in Tracking Data

A new mobile app called HydroAssist that tracks surgery and treatment data of hydrocephalus patients has been unveiled by its developers, a research team from Johns Hopkins Department of Neurology, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Department of Neurosurgery, and the Hydrocephalus Association.  Hydrocephalus, a condition that often develops at birth, is a result of excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulating on the brain. Treatment often involves surgical shunts implanted in the brain to assist in drainage, and patients and their families typically receive pamphlets describing the operation details and how to manage shunt settings. HydroAssist replaces the need for instructional cards that can often go missing, and tracks medical treatment history on a patient’s or caregiver’s phone. The app also stores programming settings of the device, information that could prove valuable in an emergency situation.
