New Drug May Help Prevent Brain Damage in Newborns

A breakthrough drug is being investigated by researchers at Madigan Army Medical Center. The team is working on a drug containing a compound known as TMPA that may aid in preventing brain damage in babies born prematurely. Brain damage due to prematurity may cause conditions such as cerebral palsy and other disorders.

The drug is designed to manipulate sensors in the body known as Nur77, which regulate inflammatory responses. The team notes that after conducting an animal study to understand how the receptor affects inflammatory responses of the brain, results indicate that the sensor’s signaling impacts perinatal brain injuries caused by preterm labor and/or preterm birth. Conditions brought on by Nur77 include neurodevelopmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, and other conditions.

While the causes of preterm labor are not completely understood, these breakthroughs in medicine hope to limit potential brain damage and other complications in premature babies.
