New Research Aims to Reduce Brachial Plexus Injuries

Brachial plexus birth injuries are caused by injury to the nerves that transfer signals to the arm, and may happen when there is difficulty delivering a baby’s shoulder through the maternal pelvis. The condition may lead to permanent damage, such as paralysis. Certain therapies and treatment options may help lessen the severity of symptoms.

Researchers out of University of California, Davis are studying brachial plexus injuries from 11 million of births from 1991 to 2012. The researchers are analyzing certain maternal characteristics (such as demographics and health information), prenatal care and hospital factors to reduce brachial plexus injuries. They are developing what is known as a “predictive risk” model to create better injury prevention plans and change the current standard practices for brachial plexus injuries.
