New Research Suggests Relationship between Folic Acid Intake and Gestational Diabetes

New Research Suggests Relationship between Folic Acid Intake and Gestational Diabetes

According to a new study, the risk of gestational diabetes increases with daily folic acid intake at the beginning of a pregnancy. Evaluating data from the China-Anhui Birth Cohort Study, Dr. Fangbiao Tao of Anhui Medical University in China, along with other colleagues, suggested that women taking folic acid supplements in the first trimester of their pregnancies have a greater risk of developing gestational diabetes. When using folic acid before pregnancy or in the second trimester, they noted, no greater risk was posed. The researchers caution, however, that “further larger cohort studies are warranted to examine this adverse effect.”
