New Study Addresses Disparities between Newborn Mortality in Black v. White Babies

In a new study published in August 2020 by scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers analyzed differences in birthing mortality among newborns. Specifically, the study suggests that in the U.S., black infants have a higher likelihood of survival at birth when cared for by black doctors—yet black babies are three-times more likely to die than white babies when white doctors are providing care. Data from 1.8 million Florida hospital births over 23 years was analyzed by researchers from George Mason University. This data supports the statistic published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that the infant mortality rate for black newborns is 2.3 times higher than that of non-Hispanic whites.

The research points out that unfortunately “racial disparities in human health can impact even the first hours of a person’s life.” Further, researchers note that “Black babies have been dying at disproportionate rates since as long as we’ve collected data. The time is now to change this and to ensure that Black infants are afforded the opportunity to thrive.” The study’s authors also stress the importance of raising awareness among hospital staff about the prevalence of racial disparities in order to reduce newborn mortality.
