In a study published this week in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers found that midpelvic forceps and vacuum deliveries (operative vaginal deliveries) lead to maternal and infant trauma rates five-to-tenfold higher compared with cesarean deliveries. While operative vaginal deliveries have been advocated for in order to reduce the rate of cesarean delivery, these are invasive procedures that pose major risks to women and their babies. Mothers that are offered operative vaginal deliveries must be informed of the risks and alternatives prior to giving consent. To decrease injuries associated with the procedures, researchers suggest improved training and candidate selection.
