Along with the start of spring, coinciding with a plethora of outdoor activities and sports, the month of March also celebrates Developmental Disability Awareness Month. Developmental disabilities pose various physical, emotional, social, and cognitive challenges, and affect an estimated 10 million children in the U.S.
While developmental disabilities often inhibit a child’s health-related quality of life, organized youth sports can play a big role in improving it. SportsPlus, an organization located in Montgomery County, Maryland, provides sports programs for children with disabilities based on a positive, encouraging environment, and fosters a sense of belonging as well as social experiences with peers. All too often kids with disabilities are reminded of their weaknesses, so this kind of organized activity helps them achieve many goals with confidence.
