Pediatric Neurology Study Detects Cerebral Palsy Early

Early detection and treatment of cerebral palsy, a permanent condition caused by brain damage, gives doctors the ability to help patients develop new neural pathways. However, cerebral palsy often goes undetected for months, or even years. Developmental delays become most noticeable as a child grows. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that cerebral palsy is generally diagnosed during the child’s first or second year.

To achieve this critical early diagnosis, pediatric neurologist Betsy Ostrander MD, (University of Utah Health) is leading a study. She conducts MRI brain imaging, performs Hammersmith Infant Neurological Exams, and studies videos of babies’ movements recorded on their due date. Together, these tests may reduce the timeline for a cerebral palsy diagnosis from about 19 months to 9.5 months—a potentially life-changing difference.
