On Wednesday, January 23, 2019, Pennsylvania hosted the state’s first Maternal Health Awareness Day, designed to raise awareness about the alarming number of preventable maternal deaths in the United States. In conjunction with national legislation signed by the President, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf took action to combat these unacceptable deaths by signing a bill aimed at reducing maternal mortality. Additionally, the legislation established a Maternal Mortality Review Committee to share current information on conditions and treatment options impacting expectant mothers with medical professionals statewide. Pennsylvania currently has the 21st highest maternal mortality rate in the nation. “The good news is we think a lot of this can be prevented,” said Lehigh Valley Health Network cardiologist Dr. Amy Ahnert.
