Amid safety concerns, Georgia’s DeKalb Medical Center may ban water births at the hospital for women who are due after October 31, 2016. The proposed ban has angered many women who feel their rights have been violated and their birth plans jeopardized. Water births have become increasingly more popular among the 5,000 births the hospital oversees annually, according to DeKalb Medical obstetrician Dr. Brad Bootstaylor. However, the hospital plans to evaluate several factors including feedback from obstetricians to decide whether this birthing method will remain an option. “It’s a matter of choices,” Bootstaylor says. “It’s a matter of choices that can be safely administered.”
