Suffering from complications such as abnormal organ development and irregular breathing at birth, a set of twins in Oregon were given very low chances for survival—which has made the celebration of their first birthday “an absolute miracle.” The twins were born sixteen weeks early after their surrogate mother suffered a placental abruption, a serious and sometimes deadly condition in which the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus before birth. Despite weighing only about 1 pound each at birth, the twins continued to get stronger over the course of their first year. “[They] won’t know what’s going on, but for us and our family it’s a celebration of life and survival,” said their father.
