PTSD from the NICU—One Mother Speaks Out to Raise Awareness

For babies born prematurely, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is often where they spend their first few weeks, or even months, of life. For parents, visiting their fragile babies in the hospital every day instead of bonding at home can be a difficult experience.

Postpartum depression, anxiety, and even symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder are among the feelings that mothers of infants in the NICU may experience—including one mom who last year spoke out about her depressive symptoms during eight-weeks of daily visits with her preterm baby. She hopes that more women come forward to talk about their experiences and raise awareness of the difficulties many women face with their mental health following a premature birth.
