Reduce Maternal Death Rates Through VTE Prevention

Maternal death rates in the U.S. are higher than in the rest of the developed world, according to an investigation undertaken by USA Today. While causes vary, it is estimated that up to 15% of maternal deaths in “high-resource settings” (including the U.S.) are due to venous thromboembolism (VTE). VTE is a condition where a blood clot forms, typically in a deep vein, that can travel through the bloodstream to the lungs (pulmonary embolism). VTE prevention strategies are recommended for women who are at risk. In the UK, a program was implemented that centered on better risk assessment and increased use of thromboprophylaxis (a measure to combat blood clotting, such as a medication). The result was a marked decrease in maternal deaths due to VTE from 2006 to 2008 compared to 2003 to 2005.
