SeriousFun Children’s Network , a growing global community of camps and programs, was founded by Hollywood legend Paul Newman in 1988 with one focus in mind: to give children with serious illnesses the chance to simply be themselves. 30 camps across 50 countries in the network have served over 600,000 kids ailing from cancer, genetic disorders, physical disabilities and other conditions, all free of charge. Campers exhibit an increase in self-esteem, confidence, maturity and independence after attending camp—including Matthew, who has a mitochondrial disease and suffers from severe seizures. After his stay at Camp Korey in Washington, which offers pet therapy sessions, Matthew’s counselor said of his experience with the dogs, “This is a dramatic response for Matthew. It was the longest period of time that he had gone seizure-free that week.”
