A University of Tokyo study in mice suggests that stem cells derived from the umbilical cord may protect nerve cells in the brain. Scientists extracted stem cells, expanded them in the lab, and used them to regenerate tissue that had been damaged by oxygen and glucose deprivation. Researchers believe these results could lead to promising therapeutic alternatives for treating neurological conditions caused by brain injuries before birth. Such complications may lead to conditions such as cerebral palsy.
