Infants suffering from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a disorder caused by a brain injury, may develop a number of conditions including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or cognitive and/or motor impairment. Treatment for HIE has traditionally included head or body cooling, phototherapy for jaundice, and anti-seizure medications if necessary. Now, researchers in China have uncovered a new type of treatment that may prevent life-long brain damage from HIE.
A new study, published in Journal of Experimental Medicine in September 2020, suggests that infant acid reflux drugs may help newborns recover from HIE. The researchers opine that damaged white brain matter may be able to be restored if a certain protein, known as the histamine H2 receptor, is blocked. In the study, acid reflux drugs such as cimetidine that target the receptor were given to mice. Researchers found that the drug improved the animals’ recovery from hypoxia-ischemia. The study’s authors also note that even when administered long after the injury occurred, the drug was still effective at restoring white brain matter.
