Study Analyzes Botox Injection Therapy in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Study Analyzes Botox Injection Therapy in Children with Cerebral Palsy

For over two decades, BTX-A (Botox) has been administered to children with cerebral palsy as a therapy for muscle spasticity. However, few studies about the use and long-term effects of Botox therapy in children have been conducted. Recently, Swedish scientists led a study analyzing medical data of over 4,400 children ages 1-15 and found that results of the Botox injections varied according to the patient’s age, sex, and motor function level. The study showed that boys were more likely to receive Botox injections than girls (28% versus 23%), and Botox treatment was most frequently given to children ages 4-6. Researchers hope the study could help to create evidence-based recommendations for Botox treatment in children and adolescents living with cerebral palsy.
